Before becoming CEO in 2011\, Ms. Agee served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and co-led Carilion’s reorganization from a collection of hospitals to a fully integrated\, physician-led clinic. The reorganization resulted in a partnership with Virginia Tech to create an allopathic medical school and research institute. Ms. Agee is a nationally recognized health care leader and past Chair of the American Hospital Association. Modern Healthcare named her one of 2021’s Women Leaders Luminaries that recognizes executives whose careers have been defined by reshaping the industry. She was first named to Modern Healthcare’s biennial list of Top 25 Women Leaders in 2017 and is perennially among its 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. She is a former member of The Joint Commission’s Board of Commissioners and past Chair of the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association and the Virginia Center for Health Innovation. Ms. Agee was named Virginia Business Person of the year in 2017 and placed on the 2020 Power List by Virginia Business\, and has been on the list of most influential persons in Virginia for the past ten years. Warden Leadership Excellence Award. Ms. Agee holds degrees with Honors from the University of Virginia and Emory University and attended the Kellogg School of Business\, Northwestern University. In 2015\, she received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Roanoke College and the Jefferson College of Health Sciences. \nClosing Keynote: Nneka Chiazor – Cox Communications\nNneka Chiazor is a bridge builder. Born in Newfoundland\, growing up between Montreal and Lagos\, Nneka’s international upbringing revealed the criticality of bridging divides. It inspired her migration to the United States to pursue the American Dream. She joined Cox Communications in 2017 as Vice President of Public and Government Affairs for Virginia and North Carolina region and leads a team entrusted with enhancing company revenues through public-private partnerships\, robust employee engagement\, digital equity programs\, and community goodwill. Before joining Cox\, she worked in several technical and corporate roles in the telecommunications industry\, including at Verizon\, where she worked on several innovations such as FiOS and smart cities. She serves on several boards and as an appointed commissioner on the Virginia Beach Development Authority. She received the 2022 Humanitarian Award from the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities for her commitment to building bridges of understanding across the commonwealth. DESCRIPTION:Empowering and Expanding the Role of Women and Minorities in HPC\nWatch the recording.\n				 \nThis quarter’s panel discussion will touch upon challenges of being a woman or minority in the field of HPC\, how those challenges can be addressed\, lessons learned\, HPC early career perspectives\, as well as means to improving diversity and inclusion in the workplace.  Attendees are invited to share their own experiences and engage with panelists during this interactive Q&A session. \nFeatured Panelists\n\nJackie Milhans – Associate Director\, Research Computing Services\, Northwestern University\n\nJackie is the Associate Director of Northwestern Research Computing Services. In this role\, she is responsible for building relationships with and gathering research support requirements from deans\, faculty\, and University leadership. She leads the development of new services to address emerging technology and compliance requirements in the diverse breadth of research domains at Northwestern. She is responsible for the long-term strategic planning for research support and delivering a portfolio of computational\, data science\, data management\, cloud\, and visualization support services for faculty\, student\, and staff researchers. \nJackie serves on a number of committees and working groups\, including recently serving as Co-Lead for the EDUCAUSE Research Computing and Data Community Group\, Co-Founder and Co-Chair of the Northwestern IT Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Steering committee\, and Co-Chair for the PEARC21 Program Committee. \nShe has a passion for learning and sharing methods to build and lead effective\, engaged\, and diverse teams through improved hiring and management practices\, as well as ensuring an equitable and inclusive workplace. She has presented at various conferences over the past several years on topics including diversity\, equity\, and inclusion; management; and research computing and data. She completed her PhD in Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and her BS in Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. She completed her Postdoc at Los Alamos National Laboratory. \n  \n\nLara Timm – HPC Engineer\, Center for High Performance Computing\, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)\n\nWith a background in biomedical and electrical engineering\, Lara is new to the field of HPC. She started her HPC journey in a graduate role at the Centre for High-Performance Computing (CHPC) in Cape Town\, South Africa. She now holds the title HPC Engineer in the Advanced Computed Engineering Lab at the CHPC. Here\, efforts are focused on pursuing research avenues in HPC as well as HCD activities\, collaboration\, and outreach. Lara is passionate about sharing her experiences\, in HPC and otherwise\, with a special interest in cloud technologies\, infrastructure as code\, HCD and outreach. Lara has a keen interest in the WHPC community – she was an early career presenter at the WHPC workshop at ISC22. \n\nRachel Spraker – Senior Director for Equity and Inclusive Excellence\, Division for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion\, University of Virginia\n\nRachel (she/they) is the Senior Director for Equity and Inclusive Excellence with the Division for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion. Rachel serves UVA in the Office for Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion as well as the Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights. Rachel develops\, implements\, and evaluates policies\, practices\, and programs which seek to advance the representational diversity\, inclusive capacity\, and sense of belonging of the University’s workforce and learning community. SUMMARY:VA-WHPC: Supercomputing For Everyone
DESCRIPTION:The High-Performance Computing Landscape at VA-WHPC Member Institutions.\nWatch the recording.\n				 \nOur panel of research computing professionals described available infrastructure and support resources with an overview of their home institutions’ HPC user base.  Challenges and learning curves involved in using HPC effectively were also discussed.  Attendees are invited to share their own experiences and engage with panelists during this interactive Q&A session.\nFeatured Panelists:\n\nMatthew Brown – Virginia Tech. Matthew joined Virginia Tech as a computational scientist in 2018. His path toward research computing began with a 12-year career in higher-ed information technology with particular focus on design and implementation of IT infrastructure and interests in networking\, systems engineering\, virtualization\, and data center design. In his role at ARC\, Matt works to enable research by connecting people with ARC’s computational resources\, optimizing those systems’ utility\, and working with others in our group to plan and engineer future systems.\n\n\nJacalyn Huband – University of Virginia. Jackie is a Computational Research Support Specialist at the University of Virginia (UVA). Her primary role is as a facilitator to researchers who are transitioning their codes onto a high-performance computing (HPC) platform. She also is active in developing workshops for programmers at all levels. In addition to her work at UVA\, Jackie has been an Associate Professor in Computer Science and a programmer in industry. She has experience programming in R\, Python\, Matlab\, C/C++\, and Fortran.\n\n\nJayshree Sarma – George Mason University. Jayshree is the Director for the Office of Research Computing at George Mason University.\n\n\nCarol Parish – University of Richmond. Carol is the Floyd D. and Elisabeth S. Gottwald Professor of Chemistry and Associate Provost for Academic Integration at the University of Richmond. She received the Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Purdue University where she studied electronic structure theory with Cliff Dykstra.  She was also a Fujitsu post-doctoral fellow in Clark Still’s laboratory at Columbia University and completed a sabbatical year in Roald Hoffmann’s group at Cornell University. She was a 2012 Fulbright Fellow studying with Sason Shaik at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She has received numerous awards for her work with undergraduates including the 2019 American Chemical Society award for Research at an Undergraduate Institution. Her research investigates the fundamental molecular nature of a wide range of physical phenomenon ranging from the accurate characterization of diradical excited states to the dynamics of motor proteins.  She has mentored more than 100 undergraduate students\, authored 58 research publications\, and raised over $4 million to support her research group from NSF\, DOE\, ACS-PRF\, and the Dreyfus Foundation.\n\n\nEric Walter – William & MaryEric got his Ph. D. in chemistry from UPenn in 2001 and started at W&M the same year.  He is now the Executive Director of Research Computing at W&M.\n\n\nMike Davis – Virginia Commonwealth UniversityMike has served the research community at VCU since 1997.  Working as a systems engineer\, Unix Manager for Academic Technology\, and since 2007 serving as the Founding Technical Director of VCU’s High Performance Research Computing. He is involved with a number of external initiatives including the NSF funded ACCORD project and the Technical Group of MARIA and is a fellow of the NSF Funded Cyber Facilitators program.

DESCRIPTION:How does HPC help with your scientific research – Faculty perspectives\, Part II\nWatch the recording.\n				 \nWe are proud to announce the founding of Virginia’s first Women in High-Performance Computing (VA-WHPC) program. Thank you for those that joined us for our first event of 2022: Female research leaders of the Commonwealth sharing and discussing how HPC has facilitated their scientific research and professional careers. \nOur speakers:\n\nAnne Brown (VT)\n\nAnne is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry\, Science Informatics Consultant and Health Analytics Coordinator at Virginia Tech. Her research interests include utilizing computational modeling to answer biological questions and aid in drug discovery and the application of computational molecular modeling to elucidate the relationship between structure\, function\, and dynamics of biomolecules. \n\nJenna Cann (GMU)\n\nJenna is a postdoctoral fellow at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Jenna received a PhD in Physics from George Mason University. Her research focuses on studying black holes in dwarf and low metallicity galaxies\, in an effort to constrain the origins of supermassive black holes that can be up to billions of times the mass of our Sun. To do this\, they use both theoretical modeling with the Cloudy spectral simulation code and infrared and X-ray observations to determine the most effective ways to find these elusive objects. Jenna currently serves as a co-officer in the NASA Goddard Association for Postdoctoral and Early Career Scholars (NGAPS+) and was a co-founder of the GMU Physics and Astronomy department’s diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and accessibility (DEIA) organization\, SPECTRUM. \n\nAlexis Edwards (VCU)\n\nAlexis is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University. Join Virginia WHPC for its inaugural event featuring inspiring lightning talks by female faculty of the Commonwealth sharing and discussing how HPC has facilitated their scientific research and professional careers. \nHow does HPC help with your research — Faculty perspectives\nOur speakers:\n\n\nJulie Quinn (UVA) – HPC for Water Resources Systems Analysis  \n\n\nJulie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Systems and Environment at the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on advancing simulation and optimization methods used to inform the design and management of water resources systems with the goals of protecting people from nature (floods and droughts)\, and nature from people (pollution and consumption). She is particularly interested in how advanced sensing and forecasting techniques can be used to inform this optimization. \n\n\nGrace Chiu (VIMS-W&M) – Coming Full Circle: My journey as a computational Bayesian \n\n\nGrace is a Professor of Environmental Statistics at William & Mary’s Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Her career has spanned three countries (US\, Canada\, Australia) as an academic and a federal government scientist. In her research\, she develops computationally intensive Bayesian models to understand complex natural phenomena from human societies and the environment. At W&M\, she teaches statistics to graduate students at the School of Marine Science. For nearly 25 years\, she has been a devoted educator of statistics to undergraduate and graduate students from a wide range of disciplines. \n\n\nMelinda Yang (UR) – Applications of large-scale genomic analyses using ancient DNA in understanding human genetic history \n\n\nMelinda is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Richmond. Her research focuses on the study of human evolutionary genetic history\, through the development and application of bioinformatic and population genetic tools on large-scale genomic sequencing data from present-day and ancient human populations. Her expertise is in the genetic history of humans of Asia\, from 40\,000 years ago to the present.
