SUMMARY:VA-WHPC: Supercomputing For Everyone
DESCRIPTION:The High-Performance Computing Landscape at VA-WHPC Member Institutions.\nWatch the recording.\n				 \nOur panel of research computing professionals described available infrastructure and support resources with an overview of their home institutions’ HPC user base.  Challenges and learning curves involved in using HPC effectively were also discussed.  Attendees are invited to share their own experiences and engage with panelists during this interactive Q&A session.\nFeatured Panelists:\n\nMatthew Brown – Virginia Tech. Matthew joined Virginia Tech as a computational scientist in 2018. His path toward research computing began with a 12-year career in higher-ed information technology with particular focus on design and implementation of IT infrastructure and interests in networking\, systems engineering\, virtualization\, and data center design. In his role at ARC\, Matt works to enable research by connecting people with ARC’s computational resources\, optimizing those systems’ utility\, and working with others in our group to plan and engineer future systems.\n\n\nJacalyn Huband – University of Virginia. Jackie is a Computational Research Support Specialist at the University of Virginia (UVA). Her primary role is as a facilitator to researchers who are transitioning their codes onto a high-performance computing (HPC) platform. She also is active in developing workshops for programmers at all levels. In addition to her work at UVA\, Jackie has been an Associate Professor in Computer Science and a programmer in industry. She has experience programming in R\, Python\, Matlab\, C/C++\, and Fortran.\n\n\nJayshree Sarma – George Mason University. Jayshree is the Director for the Office of Research Computing at George Mason University.\n\n\nCarol Parish – University of Richmond. Carol is the Floyd D. and Elisabeth S. Gottwald Professor of Chemistry and Associate Provost for Academic Integration at the University of Richmond. She received the Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Purdue University where she studied electronic structure theory with Cliff Dykstra.  She was also a Fujitsu post-doctoral fellow in Clark Still’s laboratory at Columbia University and completed a sabbatical year in Roald Hoffmann’s group at Cornell University. She was a 2012 Fulbright Fellow studying with Sason Shaik at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She has received numerous awards for her work with undergraduates including the 2019 American Chemical Society award for Research at an Undergraduate Institution. Her research investigates the fundamental molecular nature of a wide range of physical phenomenon ranging from the accurate characterization of diradical excited states to the dynamics of motor proteins.  She has mentored more than 100 undergraduate students\, authored 58 research publications\, and raised over $4 million to support her research group from NSF\, DOE\, ACS-PRF\, and the Dreyfus Foundation.\n\n\nEric Walter – William & MaryEric got his Ph. D. in chemistry from UPenn in 2001 and started at W&M the same year.  He is now the Executive Director of Research Computing at W&M.\n\n\nMike Davis – Virginia Commonwealth UniversityMike has served the research community at VCU since 1997.  Working as a systems engineer\, Unix Manager for Academic Technology\, and since 2007 serving as the Founding Technical Director of VCU’s High Performance Research Computing. He is involved with a number of external initiatives including the NSF funded ACCORD project and the Technical Group of MARIA and is a fellow of the NSF Funded Cyber Facilitators program.

DESCRIPTION:How does HPC help with your scientific research – Faculty perspectives\, Part II\nWatch the recording.\n				 \nWe are proud to announce the founding of Virginia’s first Women in High-Performance Computing (VA-WHPC) program. Thank you for those that joined us for our first event of 2022: Female research leaders of the Commonwealth sharing and discussing how HPC has facilitated their scientific research and professional careers. \nOur speakers:\n\nAnne Brown (VT)\n\nAnne is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry\, Science Informatics Consultant and Health Analytics Coordinator at Virginia Tech. Her research interests include utilizing computational modeling to answer biological questions and aid in drug discovery and the application of computational molecular modeling to elucidate the relationship between structure\, function\, and dynamics of biomolecules. \n\nJenna Cann (GMU)\n\nJenna is a postdoctoral fellow at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Jenna received a PhD in Physics from George Mason University. Her research focuses on studying black holes in dwarf and low metallicity galaxies\, in an effort to constrain the origins of supermassive black holes that can be up to billions of times the mass of our Sun. To do this\, they use both theoretical modeling with the Cloudy spectral simulation code and infrared and X-ray observations to determine the most effective ways to find these elusive objects. Jenna currently serves as a co-officer in the NASA Goddard Association for Postdoctoral and Early Career Scholars (NGAPS+) and was a co-founder of the GMU Physics and Astronomy department’s diversity\, equity\, inclusion\, and accessibility (DEIA) organization\, SPECTRUM. \n\nAlexis Edwards (VCU)\n\nAlexis is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her research focuses on understanding the etiology of substance use disorders\, suicidal behavior\, and internalizing problems\, including how these outcomes are related to one another. \nVirginia WHPC is committed to increasing diversity and inclusion by promoting and encouraging the participation of women in high-performance computing and related fields. \nSubscribe to our mailing list.

Her research focuses on advancing simulation and optimization methods used to inform the design and management of water resources systems with the goals of protecting people from nature (floods and droughts)\, and nature from people (pollution and consumption). She is particularly interested in how advanced sensing and forecasting techniques can be used to inform this optimization. \n\n\nGrace Chiu (VIMS-W&M) – Coming Full Circle: My journey as a computational Bayesian \n\n\nGrace is a Professor of Environmental Statistics at William & Mary’s Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Her career has spanned three countries (US\, Canada\, Australia) as an academic and a federal government scientist. In her research\, she develops computationally intensive Bayesian models to understand complex natural phenomena from human societies and the environment. At W&M\, she teaches statistics to graduate students at the School of Marine Science. For nearly 25 years\, she has been a devoted educator of statistics to undergraduate and graduate students from a wide range of disciplines. \n\n\nMelinda Yang (UR) – Applications of large-scale genomic analyses using ancient DNA in understanding human genetic history \n\n\nMelinda is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Richmond. Her research focuses on the study of human evolutionary genetic history\, through the development and application of bioinformatic and population genetic tools on large-scale genomic sequencing data from present-day and ancient human populations. Her expertise is in the genetic history of humans of Asia\, from 40\,000 years ago to the present.
