SUMMARY:Virginia Women in HPC - Career Paths in HPC
DESCRIPTION:VA-WHPC hosted three speakers who shared their unique backgrounds and experiences. Participants got to gained valuable insights on how your skills and passions can drive you toward a fulfilling career at the forefront of technological advancement. The event was organized to inspire participants to consider diverse career paths as well as build new connections in those areas.  \n			\n						Watch the Recording\n					 \nSpeakers:\nChristina Gancayco – Computational Consultant at Stanford University\nWhether it’s debugging code or demystifying HPC\, Christina loves to help researchers solve tough problems. Christina currently supports researchers as a Computational Consultant with Stanford Research Computing\, but her HPC career began at the University of Virginia in 2017. During her tenure with UVA Research Computing\, Christina led user support operations for the Ivy secure computing environment and collaborated with researchers from a variety of disciplines\, including pharmacology\, emergency medicine\, and neuroscience. Christina’s first exposure to HPC was as a research assistant in the UVA Functional Neuroradiology Lab\, where she initially wondered how in the world\, she was going to complete her analyses within a reasonable amount of time. Christina earned her B.S.E. in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Theater Studies from Duke University.  \nJacalyn (Jackie) Huband\, Ph.D. – Assistant Director of the Data Analytics Center\, University of Virginia \nJacalyn (Jackie) Huband\, Ph.D.\, is the Assistant Director of the Data Analytics Center within University of Virginia’s Research Computing group. She provides computational support to researchers at the University\, especially for those who are transitioning their codes onto the University’s high-performance computing (HPC) cluster. In addition to her work at UVA\, Jackie has been an Associate Professor in Computer Science and a programmer in industry. Her Ph.D. is in Computational and Applied Mathematics; she did the research for her dissertation at NASA Langley Research Center.  \nEric J. Walter\, Ph.D. – Executive Director of Research Computing\, William & Mary \n Eric Walter serves as the Director of Research Computing at W&M. He manages a group of 4 FTEs and 2 student workers. Eric Walter received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1995 from Drexel University and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. His graduate work involved computational chemistry and physics of molecule/metal interfaces. Eric started at W&M working for the physics department as a scientific programmer for the Center for Piezoelectrics by Design\, a multi-institution center for theoretical work on piezoelectric materials. In 2012\, Eric took the position of  applications analyst with the W&M HPC group and in 2015 became manager of the HPC group. Her work in diversity and inclusion has been recognized with the Internet2 Inclusivity (I2I) award and the UC Tech DEI Leadership Silver Award.    \nIria Giuffrida – Assistant Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs and Professor of the Practice of Law – W&M  \nIria Giuffrida is a Professor of the Practice of Law at William & Mary Law School and serves as the Assistant Dean for Academic & Faculty Affairs. Professor Giuffrida’s research focuses on the legal issues arising from the increasing use of artificial intelligence\, the rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT)\, and related emerging technologies.  She is involved in grant-funded experiential projects aimed at creating a diverse talent pipeline for the cybersecurity industry and participates in other grant-funded projects such as those funded by the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative.  \nWendy Wilde – Information Security Officer & GLBA Program Officer – CNU  \nWendy L. Her research focuses on developing spatiotemporal models designed to analyze fish movement data. Each speaker gave a 10-minute presentation discussing the usual issues that give new users problems. This session focused on: (1) Files and Storage in the HPC environment (2) Command-line tips for new users\, and (3) Utilizing the HPC batch system efficiently. \nWhether you’re new to HPC or looking to refine your workflow\, this session provided valuable guidance to help you navigate the learning curve with greater confidence.  \nMissed it? No worries! See the slides and recording below.  \n			\n						Watch the Recording\n					 \nPresenters:\nGeorge Flanagin\, University of Richmond: George Flanagin is currently the senior member of the Academic Research Computing (ARC) group at the University of Richmond where he has served since 2013. The ARC is a consultative arm of the research faculty\, spanning Law and Economics as well as the familiar hard sciences. George is on several faculty committees at University of Richmond: Data Analytics and Data Science\, Digital Pedagogy\, and he is on the advisory board for the Center for Liberal Arts and Artificial Intelligence. He previously taught CS curriculum in the Electrical Engineering program at VCU. George mentors research assistants in high performance computing each summer\, teaches workshops on the subject\, and pursues his own research interests in NLP for English and Spanish\, and using conventional compiler technology to create application specific languages. Before returning to academic life in 2001\, George worked in Silicon Valley and Australia at HP Labs\, Boeing Military Aircraft\, and KLA. \nLishan Yang\, George Mason University: Lishan Yang is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at George Mason University. Her research interest falls in HPC reliability and GPUs. Her research supports HPC infrastructure; her research experiments are conducted on HPC clusters. She received a Ph.D. degree in the Department of Computer Science at William & Mary in 2022. \nEric Walter\, William & Mary: Eric Walter is the Executive Director of Research Computing at William & Mary in Williamsburg\, Virginia. In this role\, he assists researchers with computational projects and manages local computing resources\, including HPC clusters on the main campus and at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). At Carnegie Mellon University\, Laura is responsible for assisting all departments at the University to comply with various laws\, regulations and contractual agreements controlling information security. DESCRIPTION:Topic: VA-WHPC Panel: AI in HPC \nThank you for those who joined us for our March 2026 speaker panel where three researchers shared their experiences and thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI) in High-Performance Computing (HPC). Each speaker gave a 10-minute presentation on how AI is used in HPC environments\, their experiences and views on AI in research computing\, how HPC infrastructure can support AI workloads\, and the practical lessons\, opportunities\, and challenges they have encountered. After the presentation\, there was time for questions and discussion.  \n			\n						Watch the Recording\n					 \nPresenters: \n• Dr. Vijeta Sharma is a High Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence (HPC-AI) scientist with over 15+ years of R&D experience in both industry and academia. She holds a master’s degree in Data Science and a PhD in the convergence of Artificial Intelligence and High-Performance Computing (HPC). She is actively engaged in Research\, Teaching\, and the mentorship. She is deeply involved in international collaborations for research\, workshops\, conferences\, and knowledge dissemination. Her core research interests span Artificial Intelligence\, Computer Vision (image & video processing)\, Human Action Recognition\, Deep Learning\, Large Vision Models (LVM)\, High-Performance Computing (HPC)\, Embodied AI\, and Robotics. Specifically\, in AI on HPC\, her passion lies in AI model parallelisation across accelerators such as CPU\, GPU\, and TPU – a central theme of her research work. She has delivered 40+ invited talks on international platforms\, including as a keynote speaker. She is an active member of Women in HPC (WHPC). Beyond technology\, she is also recognised as a woman leader and recipient of the Global Women Leadership 2022 award\, honouring her inspiring contributions to women in science and leadership. \n\nDr. Bruce Rushing is a Research Scientist within the Data Analytics Center (DAC). The DAC provides machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) analytics to UVA researchers as a core part of its mission. Dr. Rushing has expertise in ML and AI\, with an emphasis on generative probabilistic modeling\, deep learning with neural networks\, and large language models (LLMs). His previous work at the DAC includes probabilistic models for glaucoma patient trajectories\, next-image segmentation and generation with time-series MRI data\, and LLM fine-tuning for modeling semantic shifts in scientific descriptions of American wildlife. Previously\, he conducted foundational research on ML\, statistics\, LLMs\, and causal discovery as a Postdoc at Purdue University’s Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence lab. He is a trained computational philosopher and statistician\, and he has a PhD in Philosophy and MA in Mathematical Behavioral Sciences from the University of California\, Irvine\, where his dissertation focused on the decision-theoretic foundations for Bayesian and causal inference. His research interests focus on the foundations of statistics and causal modeling and scientific theorizing that emphasize building algorithms for reliable induction.• Dr. Jie Ren is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at William & Mary. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California\, Merced\, from PASA Lab and received her B.S. degree from the Beijing Institute of Technology. Her research interests span operating systems\, computer architecture\, and their intersection with machine learning and high-performance computing. Her research aims to improve the performance and resource efficiency of heterogeneous computing systems while making it easier for users to deploy and manage their applications. Her publications appear in top conferences such as SC\, PPoPP\, HPCA\, FAST\, and NeurIPS.
